National Museum Cardiff
This interdisciplinary workshop at National Museum Cardiff was designed to encourage young people to explore different forms of artistic expression through movement, visual art, music and film.
Inspired by The Rules of Art exhibition, the workshop invited participants to consider how artists communicate ideas around identity, culture and representation across different media. Music was used as one of the connecting elements, encouraging students to respond creatively to visual material and to think about how sound can shape emotion, atmosphere and narrative.
As the invited musician, I led a practical masterclass exploring how musical instruments, sound and performance techniques can be used to communicate emotion and tell stories.
The session developed into a collaborative improvisation workshop, where students experimented with musical ideas, listening, response and collective storytelling.
The project concluded with the group creating a short performance inspired by a Welsh folk tale. Bringing together ideas developed throughout the workshop, the final piece gave participants an opportunity to transform experimentation into a shared artistic outcome.
The experience reflected my wider interest in creative education and interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly in using music as a way of connecting different artistic practices and encouraging young people to develop confidence through experimentation and collective creation.
